This field guide has been requested by a number of readers of our previous 3rd Edition of Every Officer is a Leader, or those who took the online course at CommandCollege.org or CPKN.ca. It is a handy summary of all of the skills in the Every Officer is a Leader book and online courses, and it allows the officer or professional staff fast access to leadership skill development on the job or during a break.

This awareness skill of grounding involves taking responsibility for placing your own attention in each present moment, not in memory about past events or in fantasy about future events. Individuals who are grounded have more personal presence and people who are in fantasy or memory seem to be preoccupied somewhere else. Grounding is the practice of mindful selfremembering, the practice of which can enhance awareness and performance. What’s in it for you? This skill is the foundation for all other leadership skills. Individuals who are proficient in the personal mastery skill of grounding are able to:  Maintain greater self-control – i.e., their emotions, thoughts, and their responses to situations.  Increase their own and others’ safety because they are psychologically present and available.  Achieve a heightened level of situational awareness.  Concentrate more effectively on a given task or goal.  Eliminate or minimize distractions by focusing on the present. Behavioral Indicators An individual proficient in the skill of grounding:  Remains steadily in the present, not the past or future.  Remains conscious of their own thoughts and emotions, while ignoring distractions.  Focuses relentlessly on the risks at hand, and the desired goal or outcome.

Page: 10 of 136 Every Officer is a Leader - Field Guide  Aligns behaviors with steps needed to achieve the desired goal or outcome.  Finds ways to overcome obstacles to reach personal and professional goals.  During a crisis or chaotic situation, focuses on the task at hand rather than being distracted.  Retains a calm demeanor during emergencies because this inner focus “muscle” has been developed. Copyright © 2023. Every Officer Is A Leader. All Rights Reserved. Page: 11 of 136 Transforming Leadership Skills Skill 2 Centering: Including Self in the Context of Events What is this skill? Centering is an important prerequisite for being a conscious, alert, and intentional person, especially when exercising leadership. It is an awareness skill that enables an individual to leverage the strength of the grounding skills to intentionally be conscious of his or her own presence as a person with his or her own specific beliefs, biases, creative ideas, intuitions, revelations, emotions, physical experiences, and judgments in each moment. This awareness level is distinct from the awareness of external events. This deeper self-awareness can develop more quickly through self-conscious effort (a decision to focus on developing this skill) and through the practice of being very still (deep relaxation, meditation, or prayer states). Centering is the opposite of selfishness because it is this inner part of a person that enables greater awareness of the self, thus allowing the leader to be more receptive, sensitive, understanding and giving to others. What’s in it for you? Proficiency in centering will enable you to:  Be more relaxed and receptive to important interpersonal and environmental cues.  Act from a clear awareness of your own beliefs, values and ethics.  Knowing thyself has the advantage of self-confidence (you are confiding in yourself).  You can align your own inner positions with the Code of Ethics that you swear to uphold if and when you are sworn in as some kind of officer.

Page: 13 of 136 Transforming Leadership Skills Skill 3 Beliefs Clarification and Resolution: Taking a Stance on Life’s Basic Issues What is this skill? This awareness skill area is the longest one because of its importance; it is also the most difficult to explain because of its complexity. Our belief system influences our interpretation of anything experienced by our senses. It is through this interpretation that behavioral intention is formed. That is, what action do we intend to take (or not take) as a response to the experience and our assumptions about it? What’s in it for you? Proficiency in beliefs clarification and resolution will enable you to:  Clarify the foundation of your assumptions about life and your purpose in it so that you have confidence in yourself and your “modus operandi”.  Better understand the belief systems of others to give you a foundation of tolerance and possibly inclusion and respect.  Gain strength of character that will anchor you in compromising situations.  Gain peace of mind that you at least have some working understanding of life and its purpose, and your purpose in it.  Better honor diversity and have more compassion because, we believe, in reality, most people are doing the best they can with the information and assumptions they are working with, even when their assumptions are wrong or impractical.
