This awareness skill of grounding involves taking responsibility for placing your own attention in each present moment, not in memory about past events or in fantasy about future events. Individuals who are grounded have more personal presence and people who are in fantasy or memory seem to be preoccupied somewhere else. Grounding is the practice of mindful selfremembering, the practice of which can enhance awareness and performance. What’s in it for you? This skill is the foundation for all other leadership skills. Individuals who are proficient in the personal mastery skill of grounding are able to: Maintain greater self-control – i.e., their emotions, thoughts, and their responses to situations. Increase their own and others’ safety because they are psychologically present and available. Achieve a heightened level of situational awareness. Concentrate more effectively on a given task or goal. Eliminate or minimize distractions by focusing on the present. Behavioral Indicators An individual proficient in the skill of grounding: Remains steadily in the present, not the past or future. Remains conscious of their own thoughts and emotions, while ignoring distractions. Focuses relentlessly on the risks at hand, and the desired goal or outcome.
