Page: 13 of 136 Transforming Leadership Skills Skill 3 Beliefs Clarification and Resolution: Taking a Stance on Life’s Basic Issues What is this skill? This awareness skill area is the longest one because of its importance; it is also the most difficult to explain because of its complexity. Our belief system influences our interpretation of anything experienced by our senses. It is through this interpretation that behavioral intention is formed. That is, what action do we intend to take (or not take) as a response to the experience and our assumptions about it? What’s in it for you? Proficiency in beliefs clarification and resolution will enable you to: Clarify the foundation of your assumptions about life and your purpose in it so that you have confidence in yourself and your “modus operandi”. Better understand the belief systems of others to give you a foundation of tolerance and possibly inclusion and respect. Gain strength of character that will anchor you in compromising situations. Gain peace of mind that you at least have some working understanding of life and its purpose, and your purpose in it. Better honor diversity and have more compassion because, we believe, in reality, most people are doing the best they can with the information and assumptions they are working with, even when their assumptions are wrong or impractical.
