Self-disclosure refers to the ability to appropriately reveal deeper levels of self to others, as the other person in the relationship earns trust, which warrants much deeper and more genuine disclosure. This skill is critical in the development of both a person’s self-concept and his or her relationships with others. What’s in it for you? Proficiency in self-disclosure will enable you to:  Earn trust and even gain intimacy to the extent that you can be genuine, from the heart.  Be open, but not unwisely risking too much information too soon, this also promotes trust and can even encourage the development of psychological intimacy.  Let others know who you a really are, which encourages others to be open with you. Behavioral Indicators An individual proficient in the leadership skill of selfdisclosure:  Says what he or she means and means what he or she says.  Speaks their truth in a kind way without blaming or putting others down.  Enjoys the lower stress level of being authentic.  Avoids the embarrassment of being exposed as duplicitous.  Is courageous enough to be real.
