The skill of active listening also involves letting others finish, even when there is an urge to interrupt to make a point. Helping others to feel heard and to finish with what they are saying only increases the chances that the door of their perceptual two-way system will be open to a message and that it will be interpreted usefully. What’s in it for you? Proficiency in listening will enable you to:  Verify what others intend to mean by what they are saying.  Avoid assuming what others intend to mean.  Clarify others messages so you understand better.  Resolve conflicts more effectively with accurate understanding.  Gain credibility by being a receptive person who cares enough to listen. Behavioral Indicators An individual proficient in the leadership skill of listening:  Is grounded and centered.  Gives undivided attention.  Temporarily suspends emotions, premature advice, and judgments.  Uses questions in a limited and appropriate manner; and checks with the sender to see if there is mutually understood meaning.
