Goal ownership is a skill that enables you to facilitate yourself and others to take ownership of precise goals that are values-aligned that will resolve their part of an overall problem being faced. What’s in it for you? Proficiency in goal ownership will enable you to: Better lead yourself and others to craft language that gets results. Avoid owning goals that don’t fit your values or purpose. Motivate yourself and others to get results more reliably and in an organized manner. Accomplish more of what is aligned with your own, your team’s and your organization’s purpose. Avoid goal overload by prioritizing goals in order of importance, urgency and implementability. Behavioral Indicators An individual proficient in goal ownership: Verifies that there is genuine commitment to a realistic but challenging goal. Follows up with others on brief progress review dates. Supports others using a feed-forward approach instead of telling people what they did wrong – a feedback approach – explore with them how they could do better in the future. Secures consensus when working with a team so that goal ownership is verified by team members. Keeps track of and reports on goals and the extent to which they are achieved.
