When the leader realizes the person with whom he or she is working is facing a personal problem beyond the leader’s capability to handle it, it is appropriate to make a smooth referral to a professional (medical, psychological, or coaching/mentoring professional). What’s in it for you? Proficiency in making an effective referral to a professional helper will enable you to: Help people to receive the kind of help they really need. Avoid taking on everyone’s problems and you don’t pretend you can. Develop a network of trusted professionals to refer people to. Avoid liabilities for attempting to help people you aren’t qualified to help. Become known as a caring resource for the well-being of your team and organization. Behavioral Indicators An individual proficient in making an effective referral to a professional helper: Refer employees to other professionals place responsibility on the person who is most likely to have the expertise and resources to genuinely help. Avoid getting in “over their heads” and becoming liable for going outside of their sphere of expertise. Avoid the consequences of acting outside of legal or policy boundaries.
