All too often, agencies use surveys to provide the illusion of progress with the results of the surveys seldom being utilized. Every agency needs to have research on its agenda and needs to have a dedicated team to deal with it. Larger organizations may have their own research divisions, but smaller organizations often have nothing. Many keep their own statistics inefficiently due to lack of technology or processes for gathering data and recording and reporting statistics. What’s in it for you? Proficiency in formal assessment will enable you to: Understand how to verify real concerns and issues that could be opportunities for improvement. Gain credibility by working on your organization or community and not just in it. Get the facts on the table so your opinions carry some weight and have impact. Get outside help if you have a smaller agency without a budget for a full time research position. Behavioral Indicators An individual proficient in formal assessment: Leverages external resources such as university criminology faculty who may have grad students who would love to do studies. Appoints someone in the agency who has research and reporting skills to oversee the studies that will be important.
